La Beaume is a small medieval village (alt. 896m) with 134 inhabitants. It sits at the foot of the Col de Cabre, with the Burianne river running through it and along the back of the property. Originally a 14th century fortification, many of the houses, the once gated arch way and tower of the castle still survive. Its narrow streets are dotted with 9 fountains, fed by mountain water and decorated with beautiful flowers.
The nearby town of Serres (distance 19km) is a picturesque village on a rocky hillside on the Buech river. The old part has narrow streets and small passages with some of the houses dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Its Germanette water park offers swimming, fishing, boat and pedalo hire and has bars and restaurants on site. Veynes (distance 20km) is much bigger and has a large supermarket, train station and the Plan d'eau des Iscles, a large man-made lake, where you can swim, horse ride, windsurf, fish, picnic and sit at the bars and restaurants, while admiring the surrounding scenery. Both Serres and Veynes have markets selling gastronomic delights.
Other attractions worth mentioning are, the 14th century chateau of Montmaur (26km), the medieval church of Saint Geraud in Aspres sur Buech (12km) and the Benedictine priory ruins, dating back to 988AD and geological formations known as 'the dinosaurs eggs' both in Saint Andre de Rosans (40km). All these towns are served by good roads, with little traffic, and take only a few minutes to reach. La Beaume is the perfect place to spend an active or laid back holiday.
